Watteau Series
The Watteau series was inspired by the painter Watteau and the "Watteau Ballet" a pas de deux by Karole Armitage- a post modern ballet which strangely enough fused Punk Rock and Classical Ballet. I was blown away by the edgy, sensual almost erotic nature of the work and excited about the possibililty of the fusion of two seemingly opposite things. I adore the works of Jean Antoine Watteau the painter. His technical skill and mastery are unsurpassable in my favorite painting by him "Gilles" 1718-20. I used to go and see it often at the Louvre when I was a student living in Paris in 1983. My heart still races when I even get near it. I am in awe of Watteau's expert depiction of textures like heavy satin. Gilles evokes deep emotion in me. I respond to its tenderness, loneliness and the beautiful humanity of this work of art.
